You’re right. I avoided making the distinction because I didn’t want to get into the details of animal feelings. If I said that they have some feelings like ours, I would have had to direct the reader to resources which teach someone how to avoid projection and how to identify true evidence of animal feeling, which is a book unto itself. I should have said, “it’s an error in thought to project the attitudes of humans onto animals. Animals do not necessarily share all or even any of our motivations,” or something to that effect.
